About us
Background
One in four Limburgers face a brain injury in his or her immediate environment caused by accidents, strokes, operations or diseases. In Limburg, an estimated 40,000 families face the consequences of a brain injury. Acute, medical care for brain-injured patients has greatly improved in recent years. As a result, more people survive a traffic accident or stroke. However, it is not possible to prevent all the consequences of a brain injury, so more and more people have to (learn to) live with the permanent consequences of a brain injury. Although there is a wide range of care and support for patients with brain injury in the Netherlands - and also in Limburg - the quality of care remains suboptimal.
What we do
The Limburg brain injury center (EHL) develops and evaluates a care system that allows this group of patients to be recognised in time and to receive appropriate, systematic and effective care. The aim is to promote the quality of life of people with brain injury and their surroundings by obtaining, applying and disseminating knowledge.
The expertise center has four pillars:
Care innovation; developing and evaluating innovative care facilities and care products within the six provincial hospitals;
Research and valorisation; increasing knowledge about the consequences of NAH and possible effective and efficient treatment programmes; dissemination and implementation of this knowledge in the healthcare sector;
Education and training; training offer in primary university psychology education and continuing education for various professional groups;
Information and social activities; dissemination of knowledge to those affected and their relatives and the general public.
The EHL is an initiative of the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience at Maastricht University and the Maastricht University Medical Centre, and cooperates with all kinds of relevant parties in the region, such as patient organisations, the provincial information and advice center aquired brain injury, the Limburg hospitals and other relevant care providers in the field of brain injury such as Adelante, SGL and GGZ Oost-Brabant.
